Herniated disc is one of the most common and most feared diagnoses in Metro Manila. The fear is understandable — the word "herniation" sounds serious, and the pain can be severe. The good news: the majority of herniated disc cases resolve with conservative treatment within 6-12 weeks, and surgery is rarely necessary.
The intervertebral discs are gel-filled cushions between the vertebrae. A herniation occurs when the outer fibrous ring (annulus fibrosus) tears and the inner gel (nucleus pulposus) protrudes. This protrusion can compress nearby nerve roots, producing the characteristic pain, numbness, and tingling of disc-related symptoms.
Massage does not directly treat the disc herniation, but it addresses the muscle spasm that accompanies it — which is often the primary source of pain. Specific techniques:
PT is the primary conservative treatment for disc herniation. BGC has several excellent PT clinics:
A Japanese nerve massage technique available at several BGC clinics. Targets the nerve pathway with specific pressure and mobilization, reducing nerve irritation and improving nerve mobility.
Surgery is indicated when:
Aggressive deep pressure directly on the herniated level can worsen symptoms. Gentle massage targeting surrounding muscles is safe and beneficial.
